Newton's Law

I had lunch with an ex-mathematician-physicist turned banker today.

And it went something along the lines of....
'So you know the famous Newton's Law right?'

'Err...yea?'
Crap its basic Physics. Please don't embarrass myself.
'Something along the lines of nothing new gets created nor is destroyed?'

Clearly unconvinced. He iterated all 3 laws.
(i) Object in a state of stillness stays that way unless force acts upon it. Similarly, something in motion remains in motion unless a force acts upon it. If an object is moving, one reason that it slows is because friction is acting upon it. Friction is force in this case.
(ii) Force can be defined as F=ma; where m is mass and a is acceleration.
(iii) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Ah-ha! I think I got point 3 right! right?! Errr....
Anyway, the whole point is that Force, in totality, always remains constant.

So I ate and pondered and a whole slow 5 mins of thinking later, I was like, 'so what you're saying is force always remains the same in the universe? but if thats the case then the universe cannot be destroyed right and would continuously exist indefinitely since the force cannot be destroyed or lost?'

And as if he saw that question coming, he answered with no hesitation and not even to pause to think, 'True, total force remains constant, but mass and acceleration could change. There are many possible speculated ending to the universe - eg the universe continues to expand at an accelerating rate and lose mass or that it could contract and increase mass and lose out on acceleration. See, that way, force is not loss. It may be the end of us and the universe that we know, but not the destruction per say of the universe.'

Interesting.

It makes you think that you know, we, the physical and non-physical self will exist in one form or another for an indefinite period of time. Its like saying that our body is the mass and our thoughts and actions the force or acceleration. If you believe in freewill then perhaps your thoughts and actions are equivalent to the 'individual force' causing change to your static self and to the static things around you. But see, theoretically, every inch of us from the tangible to the intangible are all just part of 1 entity, the total force.

interesting..makes sense with the whole new age "thought-as-energy" idea. i think constant force is best explained in relativity/space-time fabric theory

now to wait for the LHC to finally do some colliding!

oooh he mentioned that! but i didnt quite catch on. so how is it explained in relativity/space-time fabric theory?

and how does the LHC's collision tie in?

hmm let me try. imagine space as a flat, laid out fabric. then place the sun in the middle, the fabric will be curved and streched downwards. now place the planets around the sun..each of them will pull their weight on the fabric. this explains their movement around the sun, with each gliding along their curvatures relative to the planets around them.

one of the purpose of the LHC is to find the Higgs particle, which apparently is what gives "mass" to stuff and the only undiscovered particle in the standard model. so basically if this particle is found, it completes newton's equation of the standard model (it's always been just a variable before) and explains a whole lot of other stuff e.g gravity

In The Quran, surah Al-Baqarah there was a conversation between God and the Angels that gave hint to us that there were human beings created before Adam...but just in different form :)

in vacuo: yea Ted is pretty awesome! so how does space time fabric theory tie in with constant force? haha i'm really confused...

A-Jay: psccht yaa so helpfulll...where exactly in the surah? i thought Adam was made of Earth?

at least to my understanding, the movements of planets and galaxies equates to the total force in the universe, which i assume to have always been constant since the beginning of it. (big bang explosion and the cooling of universe forming gas, stars, planets etc)

but haha so many explanations, it's so easy to get things jumbled up..it's more fun to imagine stuff as you go along.definitely food for thought :)

When God first created Adam from clay, and asked the Angels to bow down to Adam, the Angels than questioned God "Why do you create human beings when you know that they will spill blood on Earth?" (Al-Baqarah:30)

Upon reading the verse, you will question how do Angels know that human beings will spill blood when their knowledge is not beyond what they have seen and experience by Allah's mercy?

To cut a long story short, the scholars then concluded that there were human beings created (albeit in a different form) before Adam and these human beings spilled blood and created havoc. God further reiterated that Adam and Eve line of heritage is the best form of human being to date (Surah AtTin:4)

To me, this becomes the basis of my belief that "The Darwin Theory" although slightly skewed from Islam, is not so out of the world after all :)

Thats pretty interesting. Where'd you uncover all these stuff? Or you somehow pick it up on ur own? I gotta start reading the translation.
